Over $80,000 raised at Gladstone Relay for Life!

THIS YEAR CHANEL COLLEGE WAS ONCE AGAIN THE HIVE OF ACTION FOR GLADSTONE RELAY FOR LIFE.

The tents went up, teams gathered and dedicated people walked all night to raise vital funds for Cancer Council’s research, prevention and support services. Cancer affects so many families so the Gladstone event brings this huge gathering of people who just want to do something to help. It’s often devastating to see a family member or friend suffer at the unfairness of cancer and this night helps join the community together in the hope that once day Cancer will be curable.

While in 2017 there are less people in town and as some would say ‘less money around’ it certainly didn’t show at Relay for Life Gladstone with 54 Teams participating and 546 people who made the overnight experience of relaying a huge success. A proud  announcement by the local organisers that over $80,852 has been raised and more funds are still coming in proves that Gladstone is a town of people who know how to make great things happen.

The winning team at the event was Allstar Fitness Academy. Here is more about how they raised the funds and why they take part in this yearly event.

HOW MUCH MONEY HAVE YOU RAISED?

We raised $10,160 plus money to bank from the Relay itself, I believe we have almosy another $250 to bank.

WHAT WERE YOUR MAIN FUNDRAISING AVENUES?

We had quite a few different events, the two main ones that brought in the most (over $1000 at each event) was the movie night fundraiser, hiring out the gold room and putting a movie night on for people and an afternoon tea, with raffle and games at Fresh Fix Café. We also had a holiday raffle donated by Montville Village B&B which raised $960.

WHAT WAS THE MOTIVATION FOR FUNDRAISING?

Most of the team has been affected by cancer just in their families, and we are all wanting to find that cure so our children and grandchildren don’t have to grow up with cancer as common as it is.

WHAT DOES SUPPORT THE CAUSE MEAN FOR YOUR TEAM?

Our team want to support those going through treatment to show them they are not alone and also support the research to find a cure so that hearing ‘You’ve got cancer” doesn’t sound like a death sentence. Support the cause means helping each other and finding a cure.

IS THIS YOUR FIRST YEAR FUNDRAISING?

Second year fundraising for Relay for Life, and we registered late last year so didn’t have much time. This year we planned nice and early so we could have many events, raffles, protein ball drives (Thanks to Jacqui from The Raw Organics Co.)

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE RELAY FOR LIFE EVENT?

The candle light ceremony, very moving.

WHO DO YOU WANT TO RECOGNISE?

We need to say a massive thank you to NRG and Queensland Asset Integrity both who donated directly to our team. Plus a thank you to all the business that donated towards our raffles without them it would not have been possible to raise so much in our raffles.
Montville Village B&B, The Oaks Hotel Gladstone, Rock Salt, Gladstone Cinemas, Game On, The Raw Organics Co., The Coffee Club, Ribs n Rumps, Cathy’s hair studio, Narelle from Scentsy, Toni from Jamberry, Jackii from Norwex, Bianca from Tupperware, Hayley the Cleaning Lady, Tenheggeler Homes, Rayment Excavations, Call Me Cutie, Good Price Pharmacy and Kev’s Reiki Gladstone.

My team deserve a massive thank you as well, they all chipped in and helped us reach our goal, some were doing crazy hours around work, children to get prizes sorted and make things happen from organising events, promoting events via social media, hounding their friends and family for donations. It was a team effort.

A huge thanks to our friends and family who donated. Gladstone might be in a bit of a down turn but our community spirit is still there and helping others has proven to come out on top with the Cancer Council receiving the benefits.
