22 Sep Australian Reading Hour in Gladstone and Calliope
Gladstone City Library and Calliope Library kept their doors open a little later last week to host an Australian Reading Hour event with pizza from 6pm to 7pm.
The annual campaign, supported by the Australian Library and Information Association and national literary groups, encourages Australians to either rediscover or introduce themselves to the benefits of reading.
“Our Gladstone and Calliope libraries are the ideal place to spend the hour with comfortable areas for patrons to sit and relax, browse through library resources and enjoy free slices of pizza,” Gladstone Mayor, Matt Burnett said.
Families with young children made the most of the evening, with a hassle-free pizza dinner and time to share a book together.
Cr Burnett said statistics showed reading offered many educational benefits for young children and had the potential to reduce stress in adults 68 percent more than listening to music, going for a walk, or having a cup of tea.
“This was the ideal opportunity to immerse yourself in reading, learn new facts, or generally just improve overall health by simply flicking through the pages of a book for an hour,” he said.
