Name: Teresa Price
Where do you volunteer? This year I am the Secretary and Coach for Valleys Netball Club, Secretary for St Johns P&F Association, Net-Set-Go Coordinator for Gladstone Netball Association and Hookin 2 Hockey Coordinator for Gladstone Hockey Association
What do you do?
Hookin 2 Hockey Coordinator – This is an 8-week program for children aged 5- 10 to come along and try hockey and see if they like it. We play lots of games that help teach the fundamental skills of hockey.
Net-Set-Go Coordinator – I ran a 14 week program introducing girls to netball through fun games and activities. I had some extremely good helpers that assisted me with the girls on a weekly basis.
Secretary is my main role at Valleys but I also coached an under 10s nipper team this year. The role of Secretary is very diverse. From general correspondence, making up teams at the beginning of the season, ensuring all players are registered, handling complaints, sourcing coaches, arranging trophies and general helping hand.
What is your favourite thing about volunteering?
I love seeing kids grow and develop. Seeing a child shoot her first goal in netball and the look of excitement on her face, the child who holds my hand every session only to finally join in the last week, making a tackle and winning the ball at hockey. It’s all about the kids and getting them involved in sport. I always say to children and parents, I don’t care what colour their uniform is as long as they love the sport they play.
What would you say to encourage others to volunteer?
Volunteering is so rewarding. It requires no special skill or qualification, you just need to have passion and a kind heart. What you give to children will always come back to you
