Name: Sharon Louise
Where do you volunteer? I volunteer at Crow Street Creative doing lots of different things. Sometimes I work in the Bar making fantastic cocktails at our bi-monthly events. Sometimes I MC events and other times I help prepare material for arts experiences being conducted by one of our resident artists outside of Crow Street.
How long have you been volunteering there for? Since coming to Gladstone – July 2017
Why do you choose to volunteer? I choose to volunteer at Crow Street Creative as it has been a great way to connect with like-minded people at a mutual venue where I can apply existing skills/abilities, develop new skills/abilities and contribute to the organisation and arts community of Gladstone. The people I volunteer with have now formed my social circle here in Gladstone.
What is your favourite thing about volunteering? Stepping outside my comfort zone – Recently I worked with one of the resident artists – Jenny Fournier in preparing for the Harbour Festival and the arts experiences that Crow Street Creative was facilitating for the event, and I got to use a power drill and prepare the material that was being used for people to create the exquisite corpse! I also am enjoying MC’ing the stage for the monthly Friday night event at Crow Street Creative where we have been supporting original music with the No Karaoke competition! It has been fantastic to support the Gladstone Region’s the local musical talent.
What would you say to encourage others to volunteer? Find an organisation that matches your values and interests and then go for it! We all have something to give and learn!
