Where do you volunteer?
The Gladstone Pyjama Angel Foundation, 2016 Pyjama Angel of the Year
How long have you been volunteering there for?
Why did you choose to volunteer at the Gladstone Visitor Information Centre?
Because my circumstances don’t allow me to have foster children in my home the foundation has allowed me to go into the homes of other foster carers and help the foster children. After working in day-care and seeing the strong need for foster carers I decided to do whatever I could to help and also I do it to help my community. I feel that every child deserves the right to feel safe, secure, loved and supported.
What is your favourite thing about volunteering?
The reminder that there is some very unique families out there who provide these children a home, homework help, cooking and living experiences, holidays if able, doctors and specialist support as well as feed and clothe them on a daily basis. To help them out in any way possible is the greatest reward. Seeing that smile of genuine appreciation from someone who thanks you EVERY TIME you visit.
What would you say to encourage others to volunteer?
It only takes an hour out of my busy week to spend time with a child to make them feel special. This time is minor to me but to a child and family that is an hour they can be waiting for all week. There is so much to give to the community and anyone can do something to help. If you have an interest in children and are willing to offer help to a family who is already helping someone else becoming a Pyjama Angel in 2017 might be for you.
Thanks Janelle! Gladstone News appreciate our local volunteers!
