A preferred supplier arrangement to install water meters in the Gladstone Regional Council area will be awarded to the only non-local firm tendering.
New Plumbing Solutions, from Alphington in Victoria, submitted a tender that will cost ratepayers about one-third of the price offered by the closest conforming tenderer.
Manager Water Services, Anna Scott, said the recommended supplier is specialised in water meters and were able to offer a significant price differential.
The contract to replace 2270 water meters and perform backflow maintenance will cost the GRC $212,508, with the highest tender coming in at more than double that amount
GRC CEO Ros Baker explained that with the roll-out of smart water meters in the future she would like to see council develop the ability to perform this kind of work in-house; working side-by-side with a specialist in the area would enable the council to eventually match their techniques and efficiencies and take over the work themselves.
“Council is looking for areas where they can build on their expertise; this firm is a specialised metering provider; you can see from the competitive pricing that they have made it their core business,” Ms Baker said.
“Their safety checks out, we’ve checked their references from other water utilities they’ve worked with and they can confirm their efficiencies.”
“They’ve blown the competition out of the water,” she said.
