Peter Powell

Lifestyle and opportunely is what Peter Powell believes what our great region is all about. Peter has raised his family of three children with his good lady Perina and they have experienced the boom and bust times of our Region for past 20 years.

Peter is part of local industry as Warehouse Officer and in his spare time is a proud Gladstone volunteer being the secretary of the Gladstone Area Crime Stoppers committee and make himself available each month to help with the local BAM event.

Peter has a diverse back ground in Business Middle Management, Local Road Transport, Agriculture and Livestock and Working within local Major Industries.

This is Peter Second time as a candidate for a seat on the Gladstone Regional Council and he can say; I have been in the passenger seat outside of council and have been viewing and taking in the happenings around our great region for the past four years. A person, or as a ratepayer who been able to talk to council many times to put a point of view and any concerns to council.

Peter believes not being a business owner he would be a better suitable person to sit on Council. He would be able to commit 100% of himself to serve the community first, make his decisions for the community first.

Peter has been pushing the opinion with council that in the next ten to twenty years if Council  rates just continue to rise based only on the CPI index will the ratepayers of the future be able to afford to pay them? The price for water services is just outrageous. Peter would like to see if council can seek and develop attentive revenue income streams.

Peter would like to be in one of the driving seats to help continue our region growth to chase investment to gain a more diverse economy in our whole region. There is a need to work with all levels of government for our region and beat the new innovation drum which is on offer to all of us.

Peter also has strong views that our region animal control strategies are failing and the town planning needs to be more in what fit in the community and its use.

Peter is a big supporter of Arts and Culture and believes the wealth of talent throughout our region make you say this is one reason why we all live life here. We are blessed to have this.

From Gladstone, Calliope, Tannum Sands to Agnes/1770, Raglan, Boyne Valley, Miriam Vale to Lowmead and all communities in-between Peter Powell with his passion is committed to our Great Gladstone Region.

What you stand for!

I stand for our great region and all the communities who are part of it.

No one is to be ignored. That’s my commitment.

I stand for Good governance to keep this region’s lifestyle and opportunities in check.

We live here in a unique and diverse part of Queensland and we are part of the bigger region called Central Queensland and council has a big role to play in it to keep it this way.

Even throve we are in hard times with our region industries we still have a lot to offer in our whole region. There is a need for Council to help push this region now to regain its growth.

We all can’t wait for this to happen we all have to help to make it happen.

What skills will you bring to the job, if elected?

I have been part of middle management in many employment roles. You are one person who not seen but is the balance of many business. You are the ideas person who can see a business as a whole from the top to bottom of the staff scale who can point out we need to do this. You’re the person who given the tasks to make it happen and you have to work with both ends of a business to achieve it business outcomes.

I also believe l have local knowable I can say over the twenty years l have been throughout our great region as part of the transport industry, worked on our industrial sites and as a person who just explores where we live.

2 years Small business owner, Gladstone. 20 years experience customer service, industries.

Studied Supervision and Business Management, Gatton Collage.

2 years Committee Executive, Gladstone Crime Stoppers.

4years Body Corp Executive Gated Community, Brisbane.

Name three critical issues and what you can do to resolve them.

These are Council issues.

Animal control, l can see there is a need for council to start playing hard ball with this issue from the feral cat population in Gladstone, wild dogs/pigs in the rural areas and with the people and property owners who are out of touch with council by-laws or wish not to adhere them.

Council has started with free cat trap hire now and it saddens me to say the that council with the public need to more aggressive to catch these animals which in turn due to the large volume of these animal a more aggressive euthanise  program should be in place with reason. An education program to the public and also to the real-estate industry.

You can only rehouse so many animals.

The price of water and it services., l believe in one word outrageous. The price just seems to have one direction, increase. I don’t know how l can stop this but if in council l could explore and try the address the ratepayers concern.

The flooding at Barney Point., There has been a need to address this flooding problem for too many years. How many times have you driven to the end of Wood Street after a lot of rain has come and hit the lake? Time to push forward and fix the problem.

How will you make a difference?

l believe not being a business owner l would be a better suitable person to sit on Council. l would be able to commit 100% of myself to serve the community first, make his decisions for the community first.

I believe l am an ideas person a derisive person who thinks outside the box and throw it out there with a positive nature with a lot of passion in very thing in life l do. I think as a business person, a ratepayer and a concern citizen who lives in our region.

Tell us something about you that no one / most people wouldn’t know.

Born in Malaysia, (RAAF dependant) from English parents, Came to Australia when l was five. Grew up in Melbourne till l was eighteen, and then became part of the country and travel for ten years working in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland rural areas in agriculture. Meet my Lady in Mundubbera then was part of the pig farming/ breeding industry for six years before moving to Gladstone to start a small business in wholesale smallgoods and refrigerated goods courier service for two years.
