The Gladstone Cup

This Saturday sees Ferguson Park come alive with the running of the 124th Gladstone Cup with gates opening at 11am. Run over 1,608 metres, the Gladstone Cup carries prizemoney of $15,000.  The club’s feature sprint, The Newmarket Handicap, run over the sprint distance of 1,194 metres is also conducted on the same day.  Prizemoney for the Newmarket is $10,000.00. Horses are coming from far and wide including Miles, Bundaberg, Rockhampton and the weather forecast looks tremendous so a great day is assured.

FillyAs the new racing season fast approaches, the Gladstone Turf Club is proud to announce their 4th annual Art Union Raffle. The lucky winner will walk away the proud owner of a yearling filly, specifically selected from this year’s Capricorn Yearling Sales.

The filly was selected from the draft of renowned nursery, Raheen Stud. By Group 1 winning sire, Captain Sonador from Frangipani, the filly is eligible (and the nomination has been paid) for next year’s $100,000 Capricornia Yearling Sale Classic. The filly is broken in and ready to race. 200 tickets are available at $100/ticket.

David Weinert, the president of the Gladstone Turf Club said “The club is very excited about this initiative. The purpose of the art union is to give someone the opportunity to own & race a horse without the initial expense of purchasing. Even people with very limited knowledge of the racing industry can syndicate the horse to make it an inexpensive hobby whilst enjoying all that racing has to offer (the highs & the lows!). We are trying to encourage more ownership & interest in the local area to ensure the continued success of not only our club, but all the surrounding areas in Central Queensland.”

Viewing of the filly & drawing of art union is on Gladstone Cup Day this Saturday at the Gladstone Turf Club. Tickets are available by calling the club on 0749 721493 or email turfglad@bigpond.com.
