NEWLY APPOINTED CHAIR OF THE GLADSTONE YOUTH
COUNCIL, 23-YEAR-OLD TOM KIRCHNER IS A FORCE TO BE
RECKONED WITH.

Not only has he been granted the top job, he forms part of the committee at the
Gladstone Chamber of Commerce, volunteers at BAM, manages our local Betta
Electrical store and is studying his second degree at CQU.

“I find everything I take on very rewarding, you can see the difference you are
making to the community,” he said. “This year’s youth council is very diverse. We
are all very passionate and ambitious. We are looking forward to seeing what we
can achieve in one year.”

Part of Tom’s responsibility, along with his 8 youth council counterparts, is
developing programs for Youth Week and Sunfest with an ultimate goal of youths
engagement.

“We form a good representation of Gladstone’s young population,” he said. “Some
of us are still in school and some of us aren’t. We provide feedback on council
events, forward any relevant youth issues for discussion and assist in forming
programs to encourage youth participation.”

Describing himself as a “musical, business person”, Tom is likely to promote youth
participation in both throughout his year at the helm.

One thing that distinguishes Tom from others is that he doesn’t believe his job is for
everyone.

“There’s no monetary reward, it’s purely out of love for the community,” he said.
“It’s not for everyone, you have to truly want it. But that’s why it’s so important, to
ensure youth aren’t overlooked.”

When asked where he hopes to be in 10 years, Tom hopes to be at the reigns of his
own business. At the rate he is progressing, Gladstone won’t be forgetting his name
anytime soon.
