Artists wait nervously for this Saturday’s Art Awards Presentation

Hundreds of entries poured through the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum doors last week by artists from around Australia all hoping to win in ‘The 41st Rio Tinto Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards 2016′.  But which works will be selected?

Works by emerging and established artists, aged fifteen years and over, have the opportunity to take home the coveted Overall prize of $15,000 thanks to major sponsor, Rio Tinto. In addition to the Overall Award, there is a further $25,000 prize pool on offer thanks to the generous support of local individuals, businesses and industry, including Anderson’s Auto City, Queensland Alumina Limited, Gladstone Area Water Board, Australia Pacific LNG, Gladstone Ports Corporation, McDonald’s Gladstone Region and many more.

Now in its 41st year, the ‘Art Awards’ have established themselves as a nationally recognised event with twenty-two lucrative prizes on offer, across four sections of entry; Easel Paintings; Works on Paper; Three Dimensional & Fibre Works; and Digital Works.

This week (10 – 14 October), the Gallery & Museum doors are closed to the public while the ‘top secret’ installation is in progress.  The doors will reopen at 10am, this Saturday 15 October, to reveal the completed exhibition and kick off a busy day of enticing Arts events.

All are invited to join this year’s Judge, Jason Smith, Director, Geelong Gallery, on Saturday at 11am for a Floor Talk of the exhibition, followed by an Artists Lunch.  At 2pm, Smith will deliver his much-anticipated Illustrated Lecture.  Later that evening, at 6pm, the exhibition will be officially launched and the Award winners will be announced.
