The Gladstone Region was illuminated by a magnificent celebration as Anna “Mrs. T” Turetschek reached the remarkable milestone of 80 years. As the esteemed founder of the Gladstone Gymnastics Club, “Mrs. T” commemorated this special occasion surrounded by the gymnasts and coaches who have become her second family over the years. The joyous event not only honoured her age but also celebrated the enduring legacy of dedication and passion she has instilled within the club and its members.
2 years after arriving in Australia, settling in Gladstone, Anna started evening classes for ladies. As an ex-Gymnast and dancer, physical activity was a must for her at any stage of her life. This got the attention of the National Fitness Officer in Gladstone, Dick Goon Chew, where he invited Anna to observe the Gymnastics workshop of the local “Girls Club,” run by locals from Rockhampton. As Anna helped a bit, she was approached by local parents to help with preparation for upcoming regional titles. So, Anna selected 12 girls and worked every day after school for 2 weeks not expecting any great results, however, all 12 girls finished in the first 15 places from 85 participants. In October of 1977, they started the Gladstone Gymnastic Club with the 12 girls. Over time, the club grew quite significantly, counting around a thousand members today.
