The pair spoke over a phone call late last month for the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine over 12 months ago. A close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, China’s official account of the phone call stated that the words ‘Russia’ and ‘War’ were left out of the conversation, with Jinping instead referring to the issue at hand as the need for a ‘political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis’.
