March 20 is World Oral Health Day! Be Proud of Your Mouth and take care of your oral health.

With sugary drinks and sweets crowding the shelves at supermarkets, restaurants, and cafes, it is important to be mindful of the effects consuming sugar can have on you, not just for your body, but also for your mouth.

Tooth decay or cavities are one of the biggest oral health problems in Australia. When sugar or the starches from food combines with the plaque on your teeth, it eats away at your tooth enamel.

Tooth decay can be easily prevented by brushing your teeth for two minutes- twice a day, everyday- flossing daily, and having regular dental checkups.

Research from healthline.com suggests that eating a balanced diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and dairy products can help to prevent and fight tooth decay. Similarly, cutting back on sugary and sticky foods can have the same effect.

Flossing and using a mouthwash can help to kill bacteria and prevent gum diseases like gingivitis, and using a fluoride based toothpaste which can help prevent cavities.

Cutting back on alcoholic drinks, and quitting smoking can also greatly improve the health of your mouth.
