Central kids celebrate Under 8’s Week

Alien slime, air propelled rockets and asteroid pet rocks were just some of the space themed activities Gladstone Central State School (GCSS) students took part in during a special Under 8’s Week celebration last month.

Under 8’s Week is an initiative of the Early Childhood Australia Queensland Branch, and about 210 GCSS Prep to Year 3 students, and members of the public, descended on Apex Park on May 19 to play, sing and read.

GCSS Reading Hub Coordinator Lara Neilsen said the school had a long involvement in Under 8’s Week as it is an opportunity to celebrate our early learners.

“Under 8’s Week is about acknowledging the importance of learning in the early years of a child’s life, and the significance of play in their growth and development,” she said.

“Due to missing out last year because of COVID-19 we were excited to be able to create a memorable space-themed experience for our young students, our playgroup families, and the wider community who joined us.”

As part of the day, which coincided with National Simultaneous Story Time and the reading of Give Me Some Space, students took part in a host of physical and creative activity stations planned by GCSS early years teachers.

Stations were then manned by the school’s Year 6 students, providing them with a great leadership opportunity.

“Our Year 6 students were absolutely fantastic on the day, they had fun with our younger students, while encouraging and guiding them while they tried something new,” Lara said.

“The day could not have been possible without their assistance, and we’re very proud of them.

“We’re also extremely grateful to the Gladstone Library Team for allowing us to connect our event with their storytime in the park, and Gladstone Gymnastics Club for taking part in the day, their circuit was incredible and a real hit with our students.”

Parents were also invited to take part in the day, and Lara said it was great to see so many involved by taking their children and their friends through the different activities.

“It was wonderful to see the joy on the faces of parents and students alike as they explored the different activities,” Lara said.

“We’re fortunate to have an enthusiastic parent body, including an active P&C, who took time out of their day to take part in the event.”

GCSS plans to bring their Under 8’s Week event back in 2022.

“We’re already in preliminary planning stages for next year, with our hope to make the event even more inclusive to the wider community, so stay tuned,” Lara said.

GCSS’s commitment to the early learning years continues with a transition into school program, due to start Term 3.

Pre-Prep is open to all students enrolled in Prep at GCSS for 2022, and enrolments are now open.

GCSS also runs iPlay, a free public playgroup, for children up to the age of five, every Tuesday morning between 9 and 10:30am out the front of their B Block, follow the music and fun.
