The issue of youth crime has become a growing concern across various regions of our nation, prompting calls for stronger measures to address it. Recently, the Federal Coalition has taken action by introducing the Crimes and Online Safety Legislation Amendment (Combatting Online Notoriety) Bill 2024 in Parliament. This bill aims to tackle youth crime by criminalising the posting of social media content that glorifies violence and criminal activities.
Under the proposed legislation, the eSafety Commissioner would be granted specific powers to compel the removal of such videos and materials from online platforms. Colin Boyce emphasised the need for decisive action against young criminals who flaunt their illegal activities on social media.
