Gladstone Athletics Club Member Selected For Nationals

Archie, who is a twelve-year-old member at the Gladstone Athletics Club is celebrating after being selected for the LAQ Queensland State Team to compete in a nation-wide competition.

Melanie Bayntun, the Media Coordinator for Gladstone Athletics says that this is a massive achievement.

“Gladstone Athletics Club is zoned as a regional centre, so for our centre to have our athletes recognised is a big achievement for us. For our athletes to make State Team selections grows a real sense of pride and achievement.”

The Club’s President, Shane Gibson, couldn’t be happier.

“This is a great achievement for our club. We are proud of Archie, particularly as this is his first season with us. It shows that you don’t have to have professional training five times a week to be the best.”

“All of our athletes must meet a minimum local requirement to be able to compete at Regional Championships,” said Bayntun.

“At our Regional Championships that were held in Bundaberg in February, Archie qualified to compete at the McDonald’s Little Athletics Queensland State Championships on the 11th to the 13th of March. Here, he secured gold in the 100m, 200m, Long Jump (where he broke the local club record) and silver in Triple Jump.

Archie will compete with the Little Athletics Queensland State Team at the Coles Australian Little Athletics Championships at Lakeside Stadium, in Albert Park, Victoria, from the 23rd to the 24th of April.”

As far as his future is concerned, Archie’s is definitely bright. He’s a talented AFL player, having competed in the sport for a number of years.

“This season was Archie’s first with us and he took every opportunity to compete not only locally, but at carnivals and championships as well. Archie has a bright future ahead of him in sports and know that he is keen to continue in Athletics.

“Archie and his family have been a welcome addition to our club. Archie is very committed to the sport and his family volunteer and cheer for the whole club every single week.”
