BOOK REVIEW – BOY SWALLOWS UNIVERSE – BY TRENT DALTON

What an unputdownable read this is! It tells the story of a young man growing up in the 80s in a dysfunctional drug-dealing family who yearns to become a crime writer for the Courier

Mail. Trent Dalton has such a way with words, telling a gritty, gripping story with such compassion, humour and style. There are moments of absolute suspense, and others of absolute joy.

His characters are unique: an electively-mute yet seemingly psychic brother, an ex-con “babysitter” renowned for escaping the infamous Boggo Road jail, the crime reporter who is the woman of his dreams, a sadistic hitman, a twisted underworld crime boss, and the list goes on.

I highly recommend this book. I believe the main character Eli Bell will stay with me for a long time, reminding me that family, no matter what form that takes, and life, no matter what form that takes, is worth it.
