The Calliope River rises in the Calliope Range inland from the industrial port city of Gladstone, flows past the town of Calliope, before emptying into the Pacific Ocean north of Gladstone. It was first discovered in early 1853 by the Archer brothers, who also discovered and named the Fitzroy River.
They were exploring towards the source of the river and named this narrow stream, Lily Creek. (This was the headwaters of what was later the Calliope River). Following it downstream they found that it turned into a considerable river.
