The main effect the 1st World War had on Gladstone was by taking away the young men who enlisted. These servicemen all went overseas to fight and, four years of war from 1914 to 1918, played havoc with Gladstone’s advancement as it did everywhere else. Nevertheless, there was an air of quiet optimism existing which inspired confidence.
