The first event hosted students from 10 schools around the Gladstone Region, with students from Years 4-12 invited.
To be nominated, students had to achieve a 90 percent attendance rate, and for the academic award they were required to achieve an A or B in at least two subjects. Catholic schools, of which there were four, were also offered a community regional representative level. Students were able to be nominated for both awards, with fifty nominations in total coming from 10 out of 18 possible schools.
