Meet a local volunteer – Colin Burke

Colin Burke

Where do you volunteer?

Over the years I have volunteered with lots of organisations including Rotary and Gladstone Eisteddfod Society. I have volunteered as a board member on many boards including GAPDL, Relay for Life and the Salvation Army just to name a few. For any organisations that need to raise money, I provide my services as an Auctioneer.

How long have you been volunteering for?

I have been volunteering for the 20 years I have lived here. First starting with the Tannum Sands Surf Lifesaving Club many years ago, then I joined Rotary and it has gone on from there.

Why do you choose to volunteer?

I believe that if you live in a community it is the right thing to put as much back into that community as you can – just to see if you can help people, or make this world just a little better place to live in.

What is your favourite thing about volunteering?

My favourite thing about volunteering is the friendships you make. I have met people in organisations over the last 20 years that are now lifelong and close friends. That makes you feel good.

What would you say to encourage others to volunteer?

I would encourage anyone to have a go at volunteering for something – particularly if you are new to the community or are feeling a bit lonely. You will be amazed at how welcome you will be made to feel. Go for it.
