03 Apr MEET A LOCAL VOLUNTEER – MICHAEL HEATH
Name – Michael Heath
Where do you volunteer?
When did you start volunteering there?
It was sometime in March 2016.
What do you do there? (All your various duties…)
I am mainly involved with PCYC’s Braking the Cycle program. Braking the Cycle is a volunteer driver mentor program, where volunteers help learner drivers achieve their 100 hours of supervised driving. I spend approximately 2-3 hours a week in the car with learner drivers. I have also, occasionally, assisted at various roller disco and roller derby events held by PCYC.
What is your favourite thing about volunteering? E.g. What was the highlight this year?
The highlight for myself is definitely seeing our learners pass their driving test and obtain their licence!
What would you say to encourage others to volunteer?
Don’t hesitate! Braking the Cycle is an excellent way of helping young people achieve something extremely significant. Obtaining a licence opens up so many doors in terms of employment and community connection. Even if you can only commit to one hour, once a fortnight, every little bit helps. PCYC offer excellent support to all their volunteers and are incredibly flexible with hours.
