07 Jul NAIDOC WEEK 2019 7TH JULY TO 14 JULY – Voice. Treaty. Truth – Let’s work together for a shared future.
The National NAIDOC Committee invites all Australians to walk with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in a movement of the nation for a better future.
The 2019 theme, Voice. Treaty. Truth. were three key elements to the reforms set out in the Uluru Statement from the Heart. These reforms represent the unified position of First Nations Australians.
The 2019 theme recognises that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have always wanted an enhanced role in decision-making in Australia’s democracy. The theme also aims to highlight Australia’s various First Nations’ desires for lasting and effective agreements such as Treaties- which cannot be achieved unless a shared, truthful understanding of the nature of the dispute, the history, and of how we got to where we are now is established.
Naomi Jackson, Business services co-ordinator at Nhulundu Health Service said that that it is a work in progress to develop this shared future that we all strive for. “At Nhulundu Health Service our services look after social, emotional and physical wellbeing. We encourage our clients to utilise our programs and services as much as they need. NAIDOC Week highlights the services that we provide all year round,” Mr Jackson said. “NAIDCO week is an opportunity for First Nations peoples to stand together and share with the wider community our beliefs, our history and our truth.”
There is a range of NAIDOC Week activities planned by Gladstone’s local NAIDOC Committee. A full event guide is available on their social media page - www.facebook.com/NAIDOCGladstone
