As of 1st July 2024, a significant change will take effect at Riverston Bay, Lake Awoonga, with the implementation of a new marine zone prohibiting all motorised watercraft. This decision aims to create a safer environment for individuals engaging in various recreational activities such as swimming, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or simply enjoying the serene waters.
Darren Barlow, CEO of the Gladstone Area Water Board, emphasised the community’s role in driving this change, citing their input during the development of the 2020-2025 Lake Awoonga Recreation Strategy. “As we developed the strategy, we asked the community about their priorities for Lake Awoonga, and this change was one of the key requests,” Barlow stated. “We took the community feedback onboard and formally requested the new marine zone from Maritime Safety Queensland.”
