11 Aug Social Mahjong at the Pub
AT 10AM EVERY WEDNESDAY THE REEF HOTEL IN GLADSTONE COMES ALIVE WITH SOME WONDERFUL CHARACTERS. IT’S NOT THE USUAL ‘CAN I GET A BEER, LOVE’ PUB GOER. IT’S A GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO LIKE TO SOCIALIZE AND PLAY MAHJONG.
What is Mahjong you ask? It’s an ancient Chinese game, which is often modified to the Western version for the purposes of club playing. The Gladstone Mahjong club started two years ago when a club
The Gladstone Mahjong club started two years ago when a club member moved here from Brisbane where she had played for years and found there was no club in Gladstone.
She decided it was time for Gladstone to get with the Mahjong. The club started small with 4 ladies who would take turns at hosting games at their houses and eventually got quite a few people so they approached the Reef Hotel who have been wonderfully accommodating.
‘They have been happy to allow us to come to the pub and set up at tables between 10am and 3pm each Wednesday. It’s nice cause we can have lunch and get a coffee’ Maureen said.
Peter the only man in the club looks like he enjoys the company and the ladies in the club say that is a really nice social outing. They get to meet new people, get out of the house and keep their minds sharp. The game is proven to help with keeping the brain active.
If you would like to join the lovely bunch of people who play, you can turn up to The Reef Hotel any Wednesday and stay for as long as you like. Play a quick game or stay for the whole time, it’s flexible and up to you.
Thank you to the club for allowing Karina our Gladstone News editor to gatecrash last week and interrupt the usual game time doing an interview. If you have a club we should know about then please tell us
