Four years ago, teacher Mr. Warren Hodgson had a vision to run an experience-based Marine Studies program for middle school students at Trinity College. Mr Hodgson developed and began teaching Marine Studies, a two-year elective subject available to Trinity College students in Years 9 and 10. The program was the first of its kind, Mr Hodgson states, ‘My hope was that kids would appreciate and therefore look after marine environments at a personal level, get actively involved in a volunteering capacity with a marine or environmental organisation, or pursue a future profession in the marine environment’. The two-year program became so popular, it quickly doubled in size. Upon his retirement, teacher Ms Gail Riches arrived in Gladstone to continue Mr Hodgson’s legacy. Ms Riches brings to the College years of experience in both the Maritime Industry and in Education, having worked on boats in Australia and overseas and starting MarineEducation.com.au in 2018.
