Valentine’s Day Chocolate Cake Recipe!

What better way to celebrate love than with a classic, easy to make CHOCOLATE CAKE! Bonus points if you have a heart-shaped cake tin!


For cake:

  • Spray oil or melted butter, to grease
  • 1 1/3 cups firmly packed brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup skim milk
  • 125g softened butter, cubed
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 cup self-raising flour
  • 3 eggs

For icing:

  • 1 ½ cups pure icing sugar (don’t use icing mixture)
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp softened butter or margarine
  • 1 tbsp skim milk


Step 1

Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease a cake pan with melted butter or spray oil. Line the base and sides of the pan with non-stick baking paper.

Step 2

Place the sugar, milk and butter and eggs in a mixing bowl and beat until well combined. Add the cocoa, bicarb soda and flour and continue beating until smooth.

Step 3

Pour the mixture into the prepared cake pan and gently drop the pan on the bench to release air bubbles. Bake in preheated oven for approximately 40 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the centre of the cake comes out clean. Set the cake aside for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Allow to cool completely before icing.

Step 5

To make the chocolate icing, simply beat all the ingredients in a bowl on high for 2-3 minutes or until smooth (ensure you scrape the sides down with a spatula). Spread icing over the top of the cooled cake with the back of a spoon or flat knife. Enjoy!
