In order to ensure the cost of swimming remains affordable for Boyne Island and Tannum Sands families a local swim club is throwing an old fashioned treasure hunt car rally next month.

Boyne Tannum Bullets Swim Club President Brent Gibbins said the club, which swims out the Tannum Sands State School Pool, had high operational costs due to them operating all year round.

“Unlike other sporting clubs that are seasonal we operate throughout winter, and our biggest expenditure is pool heating costs, and additional rent outside our normal lease agreement,” he said.

“Club fees have increased this year, and in order to keep swimming affordable our team came up with the idea of a fun car rally to raise some much-need funds to go towards our operational costs and the development of our swimmers.”

The rally, which will take place on October 17, will involve teams solving clues or doing activities to take them to their next location where they solve another clue, until they get to the finish in Boyne Island/ Tannum Sands.

“Our club has 160 swimmers and a waiting list,” Brent said.

“We are the only learn to swim educators in the area, and we provide swimmers with the opportunity to train, compete and develop their technical skills.

“Our club plays such an important role in the local community which is why we really need the community to get behind our car rally.

“It is going to be a great family day out with a BBQ at the end with a band, jumping castle, face painting, and prizes, so lots of fun for everyone.”

Brent said the club had no corporate sponsors, but would love for local businesses to reach out if they were interested in helping to make learning this life-saving skill more affordable.

“Swimming is so much more than just a sport, it is a life-saving skill which is why it’s so important for children to learn how to swim,” he said.
