From Gladstone to the Harbour Stage. Jake Lyle’s Inspiring Opera Dream Becomes Reality

Outside Hollywood, fairytales rarely come true, but sometimes they do. For 22-year-old singer Jake Lyle, a dream years in the making is becoming reality, after being cast in Opera Australia’s production of The Phantom of the Opera. Jake stars as The Phantom in Opera Australia’s production set to perform before crowds of more than 50,000, on the spectacular over-water stage at Mrs Macquarie’s Point, on the Sydney Harbour, from the 27th of March to the 3rd of May 2026. Not a bad view for a kid who got his start in a school hall in Gladstone. It is big, bold, and a long way from the Gladstone school auditorium, but that is exactly what makes Jake’s story so special.

Jake’s rapid rise in the Opera world is a source of pride for Gladstone, with the younger performer continuing to put his hometown on the map as he takes to major stages across Australia. Jake’s rise through the world of performance has not been overnight; it has been impressive and proudly local. Growing up in Gladstone, he was just another kid giving it a go. At the age of nine, Lyle auditioned for the school’s Peter Pan Musical but did not make the cut. Therefore, Lyle thought, ‘Maybe this isn’t my calling.’ Then Shrek the Musical came around when Lyle was fourteen and landed the role of Papa Ogre. It was the combined schools’ musical here in Gladstone, which is a big community effort to put on a musical with all the school kids from ages eight to seventeen. In 2020, Lyle was cast in a role in the combined all-schools musical, The Wizard of Oz, as the Cowardly Lion. “That was where it all started,” Jake says, and you can tell he means it.
