20 Sep LOCAL BRIGHT SPARK RECOGNISED
Local Shell QGC team member Marilyn Steel was recently featured as a Bright Spark in the Australian Petroleum Production Exploration Association (APPEA) Brighter campaign. Brighter is all about natural gas and how we use it every day. The campaign aims to shine a spotlight on the diverse individuals working in the industry…and we really wanted to share it with you!

Our neighbours and communities in which we work are critical to our success
My job is about bringing the community voice into our business, to help inform how we operate and foster community understanding of who we are, what we do and why. We want to be a great local partner. Every day is different and can range from speaking with people about local issues and opportunities, through to advising on non-technical risks associated with operations. Given my role as a conduit between Curtis Island where our plant is located and the community in which we operate, there’s plenty of unique experiences. Among the most memorable is being able to board and tour the LNG vessels. I was even on the ‘Gaslog Gladstone’ (our community’s namesake) when it took its maiden voyage this year!
Gas is a cleaner form of energy
We are fortunate in Gladstone to have one of the world’s newest LNG facilities. Cutting edge technology, together with our skilled local team, means we can safely make the most of what is a precious resource. In Gladstone, the industry is starting to really settle into the fabric of the community. The benefits of diversifying the local economy with the addition of a new industry that is employing and procuring locally; delivering cleaner energy and doing so safely; has increased community comfort levels.
It’s important to invest in yourself and others, as well as in your work
My biggest passion is travel. With a global company like Shell there are work opportunities to do so, but it’s even better to be on a personal holiday. Outside work and travel, I am passionate about raising funds for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation. I’ve raised about $50,000 over the past five years in memory of my mother.
