Meet a Local Volunteer

Name: Stephen Withoos

Where do you volunteer?

Gladstone State Emergency Service (SES), currently the Acting Group Leader

How long have you been volunteering there for?

30 years (Wow that is amazing commitment & dedication to the community)

Why did you choose to volunteer at the Gladstone Visitor Information Centre?

To help out the community! When I started around 30 years ago there wasn’t really anyone around to assist. I really enjoy helping out when the proverbial hits the fan. We provide all kinds of assistance from car park traffic control to storm damage to deployments to cyclone damage. I was sent to assist with cyclone Yasi and Larry clean up’s as well out to Emerald to help after the floods. We also assist other organisations like the rural fire brigades.

What is your favourite thing about volunteering?

That worthwhile feeling! I thoroughly enjoy knowing I’ve been able to help out people when they most need it, it’s an incredible feeling.

What would you say to encourage others to volunteer?

There are many reasons to join the SES, for the camaraderie, the enjoyment and new skills. You don’t have to have the skills, you will be taught, and we like to work to peoples strengths. Volunteers get to try something new and we even have courses that volunteers can complete. If you want to meet new people and do your community proud then a volunteer position at SES might be for you.

Thanks Stephen! Gladstone News appreciate our local volunteers!
