10 Feb Doctor service on wheels hits the Boyne Valley roads
Residents in the Boyne Valley communities of Ubobo, Builyan and Nagoorin now have access to a state-of-the-art medical clinic on wheels following the launch of the MediBus service last month.
A community-based health care project two years in the making, MediBus is an actual Mercedes Benz Volgren low-floored bus, fitted out with two consulting rooms, a sample collection room, reception and storage room.
The doctors behind the project, Dr Mohammad Umair Siddiqui and Dr Syeda Saiqa, said with remoteness a determinant of health outcomes they were focused on reducing distances to healthcare services.
“Having worked in remote areas around Australia, it is extremely gratifying as a doctor to be able to provide health care services in places that are in desperate need of them,” he said.
“We’re pleased to be able to offer quality healthcare to Boyne Valley residents, keeping them in their communities for longer.”
Nagoorin resident Lyndal Slater said the MediBus was an invaluable service for Boyne Valley residents.
“These communities have had no doctor up until now, with residents, the majority of them elderly, having to travel an hour each way into Gladstone to see a GP,” she said.
“Some end up not getting the health care they need because they cannot make the long trip.
“Having this service means that these people can stay in their community, and not have to relocate to larger towns like Gladstone just to access medical support services.
“We can’t thank Dr Mohammad and Dr Syeda enough for funding this service, and working with local residents to get the MediBus off the ground and onto the road.”
Dr Mohammad said the plan is to eventually expand the service to other smaller towns around the Gladstone Region.
“We want one doctor to travel 50 kilometres to see 30 patients, instead of it being the other way around,” he said.
“In addition to our GP service we also plan to provide imaging and pathology services, physiotherapy and other allied services.”
With the roster to be determined by the needs of the communities it services, the MediBus currently offers a weekly Sunday service alternating between the three towns.
