From January 1st of next year, car makers will be forced to sell more electric and fuel-efficient vehicles into the Australian market or face financial penalties. Federal Member for Flynn, Colin Boyce has slammed Labor’s proposal to place a carbon tax on SUV’s Utes and 4WDs. Mr Boyce said Labor is threatening to add thousands of dollars to the cost of buying a new family car under its proposed Vehicle Efficiency Standard. “Under the proposed new standard, Labor will place penalties on new petrol and diesel vehicles over a certain emissions limit to subsidise EVs and make them relatively more affordable,” Mr Boyce said. Mr. Boyce argues that the proposed Vehicle Efficiency Standard would significantly increase the cost of purchasing popular vehicles like SUVs and Utes, impacting families who rely on them for transportation and tradies who depend on them for work.
Highlighting concerns about the affordability of electric vehicles (EVs), Mr. Boyce asserts that Labor’s plan to subsidise EVs through penalties on petrol and diesel vehicles could disproportionately affect Australians who cannot afford to switch to electric models. He also questions the efficacy of the proposed standard, citing examples such as the Mazda CX-30 in the United Kingdom, which he claims is not as fuel-efficient as portrayed and comes with a substantial price difference compared to Australia.
