14 Jul EDUCATION CHARITY REACHES MILESTONE WITH 600 STUDENTS SUPPORTED IN GLADSTONE
Leading children’s education charity The Smith Family has reached a milestone in the city of Gladstone, with 600 students now supported under the organisation’s flagship Learning for Life program.
The Learning for Life sponsorship program provides each student with a combination of financial and personal support, as well as vital learning and mentoring programs that help them keep up and stay motivated throughout their educational journey.
With the generous support of corporate partner Orica, The Smith Family has been able to establish the program in the Gladstone community, as well as double the number of students who are benefitting from the sponsorship.
Jaceen’s daughter Alannah, aged 10, is supported through Gladstone’s Learning for Life program.
“Having a disability and my partner as my full-time carer, we heard about The Smith Family when we moved to Gladstone. We were struggling to support Alannah and ourselves financially,” said Jaceen.
Now that Alannah is being sponsored, her family is able to afford costly items like school uniforms and shoes, textbooks and stationery – and she has access to a range of educational support programs to help her achieve at school. This includes the student2student program, which matches students with peer buddies who help and encourage them with their reading.
“She’s read something like 160 books in seven weeks, so that’s absolutely phenomenal. It’s something I could not have done on my own,” said Jaceen.
“People don’t realise how much of an impact their donations are having on the kids that are going through these programs and on the families that have been struggling.”
