Australia’s housing construction sector is showing early signs of recovery, with new home starts increasing over the past year, but industry experts warn the pace remains well below what is needed to meet national housing targets.
New data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) shows dwelling commencements rose by 11.2 per cent in the 12 months to September 2025, reaching 184,460 new homes nationwide. The figures form part of the ABS Building Activity data for the September quarter, which tracks the value of building work and the number of dwellings commenced, completed and currently under construction.
