Gladstone’s Part in World War 2

When World War Two broke out, the Gladstone Council was advised that the protection of civil undertakings was its responsibility. Within a week the council received instructions on national emergency services. 

For the Gladstonites left at home it was a time when ration books and identity cards were used to buy goods and they had air raid shelters built in their back yards. There was no sport on weekends, but everyone was kept busy helping with the war efforts.
