REIQ Urges Action on Housing Crisis as Federal Targets Missed

The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) has voiced its disappointment, though not surprise, regarding recent revelations that the Albanese Government’s ambitious target of building 1.2 million homes is unlikely to be met. Treasury advice indicating this shortfall has prompted the REIQ to call for a more strategic and coordinated national approach to housing.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella stated that this disclosure underscores the urgent need to move beyond mere numerical targets. “These targets are just numbers until they are realised as homes,” Ms. Mercorella said. “We want to see bold ambition – but it must be backed by practical, coordinated action and not just arbitrary numbers that make headlines but don’t result in enough homes being built.”
