Gladstone’s young innovators are making their mark on the national stage. Four Year 8 students from Toolooa State High School, Hani, Xavier, Riley, and Jacob, were named the Gladstone regional winners of the 2025 Future Makers STEM Inventors Challenge, celebrated on the opening day of World Science Festival Queensland.
The students impressed judges with their inventive “From Roof to Root” prototype, a rainwater hydroponics home cooling system designed to reduce reliance on air conditioning in Queensland’s intense heat. Using solar energy to pump recycled water through a hydroponic tower, the system not only cools homes but also grows leafy vegetables sustainably in backyards.
