Since its inception in 1976, the Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards have stood as one of Queensland’s most prestigious regional art events, eagerly anticipated by artists and art lovers alike each year. What began as a tribute to a beloved local figure has grown into a cornerstone of the Gladstone arts calendar, continuing to honour both creativity and community five decades on.
The Awards were first established in memory of Martin Hanson (1923–1976), a highly respected Gladstone businessman, Member for Port Curtis (1963–1976), and dedicated patron of the Gladstone Artists Club. Following his passing, the Club, in conjunction with the Hanson family, hosted the inaugural Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards and Exhibition in 1976. Since 1993, the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum has proudly served as custodian of the event, continuing its legacy of celebrating artistic talent from across the region and beyond.
