Free sports for local kids

METEORS Sports Club new Board of Directors have a vision of offering free sports for local children.

Club Secretary Anthony Coleiro said the club wanted to create a “family” to support children who had not had the opportunity to play sport, or be a part of a team, for whatever reasons.

“We (the directors) believe all children, regardless of their background should be able to play sport and feel a part of a community,” he said.

“Our initiative is about creating a level playing field, where kids can learn and have opportunity to succeed in sport, particularly if they come from low income or disadvantaged families.

“And this is about so much more than sport. Players learn about disciple, important values and create friendships for life.”

Mr Coleiro said the club currently had two football sides in the local competition under their Kids Sport for Free Initiative, an under 10 mixed team and an under 11 mixed team, but the board’s vision for beyond 2021 was to support children across a range of sports, not just football.

With spots still available in the club’s free initiative, Mr Coleiro encouraged anyone interested in taking part to come along and join in.

“This is a great opportunity for kids to come together in a safe and positive environment, and have some fun while being physically active,” he said.

“We train on a Tuesday and Thursday night at 5:15pm, and it is completely free, but parent involvement is crucial.

“Children outside of the under 10 and under 11 age brackets are also welcome to come down and get involved as we will be adding more teams next year.”

Mr Coleiro said the club would like to thank the current sponsors of their free sports initiative including Bill Robertson Toyota, Quadnet, QCS-NDT, Xtreme Engineering and JDE Electrical.

“These businesses have jumped onboard with our initiative, and we couldn’t have done it without their support,” he said.

“But we still have a lot more we would like to achieve, so I would like to encourage other local businesses, who believe in our vision of free sports for Gladstone Region kids to get in touch with us.

“As a not-for-profit club all sponsorship goes directly into supporting our players.

“And if you’re a community member who feels like you have something to offer our kids, we also want to hear from you and how you can contribute to our Meteors family.”
