30 May Freestyle Industries owner’s hope the new store will be a social spot for youth!
Gladstone locals, Krystal and Peter Bird are excited to announce the opening of their new store Freestyle Industries.
Freestyle Industries is a retail store that specialises in selling high quality scooters and accessories and they’re hoping to expand and improve the skate culture in Gladstone around their store.
Freestyle Industries came to fruition after 9-year-old Brayth pitched his dream business plan to his parents and after looking into further they noticed there was a gap in the market that they were eager to fill.
Formerly Peter was a diesel fitter and Krystal an event planner but they have left their careers behind to pursue something different. The local couple are Mum and Dad to three children Hayden, 14, Brayth, 9 and Khloe, 6. Being parents themselves they were able to recognise the importance in youth having a safe place they can go to interact with other Scooter enthusiasts where they feel comfortable and welcome.
“We want to bring something more than just scooters to the youth of Gladstone. We want them to feel as if this shop is a social spot where they can talk, hang out, and interact with not only us but also other likeminded people. We love when kids come in and talk to us. Even if they aren’t wanting to buy anything, just talking to us in general, helps us learn what the kids want and what will make this business thrive in the future.”
The exciting to new addition to Gladstone’s skate hub, the Pump Track, has proven to be a great asset to Gladstone encouraging families to get out and utilise the facilities.
“There are many benefits to kids skating and scooting, it helps keep them active and healthy, whilst also allowing them to feel a sense of belonging, when they are down at the skate park/pump track they form friendships that are outside of their usual school circles, allowing them to develop those very important social skills. They learn off other kids and bond over their experiences. My son suffers anxiety issues and is very shy, but being a part of the culture that is the skate park has helped him come out of his shell and not be afraid to make new friends.”
If you’d like to show support to this awesome family business next time you head down to the pump track stop in and see the new store and say hello. You’ll find the bright green Freestyle Industries building next to Crow Street Creative.
