Two of Gladstone’s most popular artists are a married couple from Rockhampton!
In a remarkable winning streak and proof that talent attracts talent, husband and wife Greg and Andrea Chapman have taken home two of the four prizes in the QAL People’s Choice Awards, part of the 42nd Rio Tinto Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards, which close this week.
Andrea’s nostalgic oil on linen Slipway to Heaven won the easel paintings category while Greg’s imposing stainless steel portrait of Albert Einstein – Screw Relativity – won the People’s Choice Award for three-dimensional works.
It was a case of back to back People’s Choice awards for Andrea who won the same award at last year’s exhibition but it was even sweeter this time to share the honour with her husband of 35 years.
Gladstone Regional Art Gallery curator and manager Jo Duke said it was the first time a couple had won “matching” awards at the annual event.
“These awards are extremely competitive and just being hung there is a real honour,” Andrea said “Slipway was a painting that challenged me technically and I reworked it substantially until I was happy with it. Knowing that so many people then enjoyed and engaged with it is incredibly rewarding.”
Greg’s wry portrait of legendary scientist Einstein comprises hundreds of mill scale steel buttons in a curved stainless steel plate. Both works are available for sale.
