For the first time in 4 years since the Aquaculture Gladstone facility opened its doors, the multi-species fish hatchery located in Lake Awoonga has successfully produced and stocked three native fish species: Barramundi, Mangrove Jack and Sea Mullet, in a single year, highlighting this as an important milestone years in the making.
The Aquaculture Gladstone team has dedicated many hours of their time to developing the broodstock of the Sea Mullet and Mangrove Jack – notoriously difficult fish species to research – to the point where they can be produced seasonally. Mangrove Jack broodstock can take up to 5 years alone to reach maturity and be ready to spawn from being caught in the wild, whereas Sea Mullet can take up to 3 years.
