From humble beginnings to receiving an Order of Australia Medal for her outstanding achievements in the world of gymnastics and administration, Gladstone local Mrs. Anna Turetschek has experienced the highs and lows of competing, retiring, and teaching over her incredible 65-year career.
Growing up in Czechoslovakia, gymnastics was part of the Central European school curriculum alongside many other sports, holding competitions that progressed from regional to state and national levels. Being naturally strong and flexible, Anna was gifted from the beginning, finding basic gymnastics skills easy to learn. As she began achieving great results in competitions, she decided to pursue the sport further, inspired by her country’s strong gymnastics history and meeting future Olympic champion Věra Čáslavská. Anna lived and breathed the sport and couldn’t wait to go to training.
