Rebuilding Hope, One Home at a Time

Early in 2025, Shelter Collective took over ownership of the Cooinda/Hibiscus Gardens complex on the corner of Sigg and French Streets in South Gladstone. The Cooinda Units are 20 independent living studio units that were built in the 1960s and 1980s. In 1989, the Blue Nurses built the aged care facility known as Hibiscus Gardens with Gladstone Community donations plus a Federal Government grant of two dollars for every one dollar raised locally. At the same time, the Gladstone Community Housing Group, who owned and managed the Cooinda Units, donated them to the Blue Nurses. Subsequently, Uniting Care took over the ownership and management of Cooinda Hibiscus Garden, but in 2015, they decided to abandon the property, and it was left neglected for just over a decade. That is, until Shelter Collective became involved.
