The Gladstone Region’s First Nations community gathered on Sunday 9 November at the Philip Street Communities and Families Precinct to honour Year 12 graduates at the Rites of Passage 2025 celebration. Led by the First Nations Working Group of Gladstone Region engaging in action Together (GRT), the event built on last year’s successful ceremony and continued the community’s commitment to recognising the achievements and cultural identity of First Nations youth.
More than 100 people attended, joining students, families and Elders to acknowledge each young person’s educational journey and the importance of culture, community and self-determination as they step into adulthood. The day opened with an Acknowledgment of Country from Year 12 student LeKarah, followed by a traditional Smoking Ceremony and Kup Murri. Speeches from local Elders and Gladstone Regional Council Deputy Mayor Natalia Muszkat added heartfelt encouragement and wisdom.
