On 4th and 5th August, Calliope State School and Gladstone West State School attended Quoin Island and participated in rotational activities facilitated by Tangaroa Blue, the Fitzroy Basin Association Team Turtle CQ program, Quoin Island Retreat, and CQUniversity. Through the support of volunteers and staff, 180 Year 4 students participated in hands-on learning experiences, including the daily release of a turtle. Participants also benefited from the involvement of filmmaker and CQUniversity Senior Lecturer Dr Jan Cattoni and world-renowned biodiversity expert Dr Carolyn Lundquist. The excursion is part of the award winning Buraligim Weiber (place of learning) program, embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into the HASS curriculum. The program has been running since 2021 and is supported by STEM Central, funded by Australia Pacific LNG, operated downstream by ConocoPhillips, Santos and Shell QGC.
