Locals around the small town of Ubobo, Boyne Valley, excitedly celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Many Peaks to Barrimoon section of the Gladstone-Monto Railway Line on the 15th of August, marking a significant achievement in the history of the local region.
The first railway lines in Queensland opened from Ipswich to Bigge’s Camp (Grandchester) in July 1865, followed by Rockhampton to Westwood in 1867. Eventually, three distinct, isolated railway networks would be opened – the Southern and Western Railway, the Central Railway and the Great Northern Railway, all of which would gradually be connected, but it wasn’t until 1924 that passengers could travel solely by train from Brisbane to Cairns.
