26 Jul Gladstone State High School : Celebrates NAIDOC Week 2023
NAIDOC Week celebrates the rich cultural heritage, resilience, and achievements of Australia’s Indigenous peoples.
The theme for the week was “For Our Elders” honouring the wisdom, guidance and contributions of Aboriginal and Torress Strait Islander elders. Throughout the week at Gladstone State High School various events and activities were held that showcased First Nations cultures and highlighted the significance of intergenerational knowledge transfer. Elders are revered as the custodians of traditional wisdom, stories, and practices, and their invaluable role in shaping the future was acknowledged. Students were able to experience the knowledge from elders in our community.
The highlight of events for the week was a touching Welcome to Country and a presentation from Aunty Juliri (Traditional Owner and Gooreng Gooreng Elder) at a whole school parade. Aunty Juliri presented the school with an image of herself and two of her siblings standing at their old house which used to be where the current school basketball are located.
