The BIRD in the HERD by Kathryn Apel
Illustrated by Renee Treml
This delightful picture book by Miriam Vale local Kathryn Apel is a joy to read aloud to young children.
Simple rhyming text is complemented by simple and colourful illustrations, making this a story to be read again and again.
The format is a little like The house that Jack built so bits of the story are repeated, allowing children to join in the rhyming fun.
It’s a great look at a typical Aussie cattle farm, and the children will love finding the hidden cows at the end.
The BIRD in the HERD is available for purchase from Gladstone City Library, or for loan from any Gladstone Regional Libraries.
Kathryn Apel is a born and bred farm girl who’s scared of cows.
She lives among the gum trees, kangaroos and cattle on a Queensland grazing property.
Kat paints pictures with words because, as much as she’d love to, she can’t draw.
She loves pumping poetry because she can flex her muscles across other genres, to bend (and break) writing rules.
